Inspiration

Ok, this block idea came to me so easily! The theme said "maker" and I thought "thread." I wanted to show several different styles of spools. Personally, I mostly have Gutermann thread with a white top and bottom, but many people love brands like Aurifil, Wonderfil, Mettler, and Isacord. So I included 4 styles of spools in my block.

What You'll Need

You don't need much fabric to make this 12" (finished) block. Scraps of most of the fabrics will do just fine.

Minumum fabric needed:

  1. Background 1: 1 Fat Eighth (Kona Sunny)
  2. Background 2: 1 Fat Eighth (Kona Banana)
  3. Spool 1 (white ): 4" x 4" piece (Kona White)
  4. Spool 2 (orange): 3" x 3" piece (Kona Orange)
  5. Spool 3 (green): 3" x 4" piece (Kona Avocado)
  6. Spool 4 (purple): 3" x 3" piece (Kona Bright Peri)
  7. Thread: 6" x 11" piece (I used a grey blue stripe from the Folktale collection by Lella Boutique for Moda.)

Of course, you'll need thread, and depending on what you use the block for, perhaps batting, backing, and binding, etc.

Quilting

You can, of course, quilt this any way you want, but I wanted to try free motion quilting with loops and waves to represent loose threads. I drew them on with a dissolvable pen first, then used the free motion foot on my machine. It was my first time trying free motion quilting in about 7 years, and the very first time on my current machine.

I should have basted it better. I had quite a bit of shifting because I skipped the spray baste, thinking since it was only a single block I'd be ok. Well, lesson learned. I've decided this block is "Dancing Spools," and I'm just going with it! :) I bound it and added a hanging loop to hang it on the wall next to my thread rack!
