In a recent survey, I realized many people don't know about my patterns. So I wrote a series of re-introductory emails for each, and those turned out to be basically blog length, so I'm posting it all here for you as well. Think of this post (and the next 2) as a coffee chat with me, your pattern designer friend. I'm going to tell you allll about them like they're my babies, cuz they totally are my babies!
I'm especially excited to tell you how they each relate to motherhood and help you nurture yourself and your family💕.
All About the Letters Quilt Pattern
First of all, let's answer my very favorite question:
What's this Letters quilt got to do with being a mom? Everything.
You're busy, Mama. (And that goes for you with “Grand” in your title, too!) This quilt won't add to your burdens or lengthen your to-do list, Letters is the salve for those things.
And did I mention the theme possibilities? Not yet? Ok, we'll get there… I know you love themes, Mama. Holidays? Parties? ✅ ✅…read on…
I've made this quilt SEVEN times. I literally cannot get enough of it. Know why? Because despite the shrinking amount of time I have to sew with 2 little kids, this quilt is efficient and simple. Meaning, I can pick it up here and there when I have time without having to reorient my brain each time to figure it out. That's huge.
It's repetitive in the best I've-got-so-much-on-my-mind-already-just-let-me-get-in-the-sew-zone way. 💆🏻♀️
It's easy to feel like I am making progress no matter if I have 15 minutes to sew or a whole glorious hour. ✨
And lastly, it's got that pre-digital era nostalgia. I mean, we don't want to make a quilt about texting, am I right? But take me back to the days of Lisa Frank and pen pals, please! (Oh man, I'm seeing a Lisa Frank color palette forming in my mind right now...)
Letters Quilt: Colorways, Sizes, and Related Projects
So, let's get to the details, the fine print, if you will (see what I did there?):
The Letters Quilt was my very first pattern, and it's inspired by the letters I wrote to my Grandma ever since I could write…even though she only lived 2 doors down!
The pattern is available in ombré and scrappy color ways and baby and throw sizes.
It's perfect for themed quilts (told you we'd get to that. You're doing great…keep reading!). Here are my favorite themes:
- Letters to Santa (think all those lovely Christmas fabrics!)
- Letters From Camp (think woodland and floral fabrics!)
- Love Letters (think of all the pinks and reds and hearts!)
- Signature Quilts (think of guests signing the quilt with a pen for weddings, retirement parties, baby showers, etc.)
Bonus and Related Projects
And there's more than just a quilt pattern! Check out these free, related things for Letters, too.
- Have you seen the free printable stationery that matches the quilt?! Perfect for gifting a Letters quilt.
- Want a free self-paced email-based quilt along to walk you through the process and encourage and motivate you, too? Give it a go!
- Did you know the ombré version makes a few extra blocks? Check out these bonus project ideas!
- And I'm working on a little secret project to involve the kiddos with the Letters Quilt this fall…it involves Santa…ok it's a little mini Letter to Santa block with your kid's actual handwriting and wishlist on the back! Oh my goodness…that's been hard to hold in! Coming soon!
Ok, LET'S TALK FABRIC.
There are some really fun fabrics to inspire your Letters Quilt(s – because you'll be making them on repeat, if you're anything like me!).
My absolute favorite is Rifle Paper Co's Bon Voyage collection because it's got cities and stamps, I mean, it's meant for this quilt! I would've called it Pen Pals, but they didn't ask me…They even have a new Christmas version of the stamps fabric included in the Holiday Classics II collection. I gotta grab some soon!
I'm always drawn to low volume prints with handwriting or script or other text on it for the “paper” inside the envelopes. I've used this sparkler fabric for a Letters to Santa quilt, and this decostitch was my very first paper fabric in the purple ombré version. I've also just gone with Kona Cotton in White and Snow. I think this typewriter style one would be amazing.
The All My Heart collection was great for my Love Letters quilt. Check out this fabric for the backing. Chef's kiss. The scrappy color way is fat quarter friendly, too!
Fancy That Design House Christmas collections are always wonderful for a Christmas/Santa version. Cozy Wonderland is this year's collection.
And my next Letters (yup, we're going for 8!) is going to be a spin on the ombré…more of a stripe, because the colors won't be a fade of one hue, but they'll be arranged in the same way. I found this beautiful dainty floral and its colors reminded me of soft vintage papers like ledgers and old invitations and programs. So I decided to use the floral for the background (going out of the box!) and have solid envelopes that pull out those vintage colors. Oh my goodness! I can't wait to show you! (Fabric pull below.)
Ready to Sew?
Ok, I don't know about you, but I am headed straight for my machine!
If you are still here sew ready to get in the sew-zone with me, go grab your copy of the Letters Quilt. When you're finished, please send me pics! I want to see your take on this pattern.
